Meet Mun, the White Cat Named After Black Wood
Every good cat site needs a boss. Ours is Mun.
Mun is a British Longhair with a thick white coat and the kind of blue eyes that are hard to look away from. He is a big boy at about 13 pounds (6 kg) and completely convinced that every ball of yarn in the house belongs to him.
He came into our lives as a gift from a Vietnamese friend, who also gave him his name. In Vietnamese, “mun” means ebony, the deep black wood used for fine furniture. Mun, of course, is as white as fresh snow. Our friend thought that was hilarious. We agreed, and the name stuck. (Say it close to “moon.”)
A few honest facts about the boss:
- Favorite toy: a ball of yarn, always under supervision, since swallowed string can be dangerous for cats.
- Litter habits: perfect. Mun uses his box every time, so when we write about cats who stop using the litter box, we rely on veterinary sources and other owners’ experiences, not stories from our own home.
- Size: large and long-haired, which is a daily reminder that box size, entry height and grooming are never small details.
- Neutered: since he was three years old.
Mun is our logo, our mascot and the face of every writing desk on this site.
Why We Started BestPurrPicks
Search for almost any cat product and you will find the same thing: long lists of ten products, every one of them “amazing,” with very little about what happens after the box is opened. Very few of them answer the questions owners actually ask:
- My cat suddenly stopped using the litter box. Is it the box, the litter or something else?
- Is a self-cleaning litter box worth the money for a home with two cats?
- How do I stop litter from ending up in my bed?
So we flipped the approach. We start with the problem, then look for the products that solve it. If a popular product does not fit the situation, it does not make the list, no matter how well it sells.
How We Pick What to Recommend
No single opinion decides a recommendation. We combine:
- Long-term owner experiences. We read long discussions in cat owner communities and the critical reviews most sites skip, to learn how products hold up after weeks and months, not just on day one.
- Brand details. Sizes, entry heights, materials, warranty and the real cost of refills and replacement parts.
- Hands-on use with Mun, when we have it. If Mun has used a product, the guide says so. If he has not, we say that too. We never pretend.
