This page explains how we research products, how we decide what to recommend and what the BestPurrPicks Score means. We want you to know exactly how much weight to give each of our recommendations.

We Start From the Owner’s Problem

Every guide begins with a real situation cat owners face, such as a cat avoiding the litter box, litter tracking through the house or a picky drinker. We then look for products that solve that specific problem. A product that is popular but does not fit the situation will not make the list.

Where Our Information Comes From

  1. Long-term owner reports. We read discussions in large cat owner communities and the critical reviews that many sites ignore. These show how a product performs after the first week: odor, durability, noise, cleaning effort and whether cats actually use it.
  2. Manufacturer details. We check dimensions, entry height, materials, power requirements, warranty and replacement part costs from the brand itself.
  3. Hands-on use at home. When a product has been used at home with Mun, our cat, the guide says so clearly. When a pick is based on research only, we say that too. We never claim experience we do not have.
  4. Veterinary references. Health related advice is checked against reputable veterinary sources. Guides on health topics tell readers when a vet visit is the right next step.

What We Look At

The exact checklist depends on the category, but most guides compare products on:

  • Cat acceptance. Will a typical cat use it? Size, entry height, noise and smell all matter more than features.
  • Everyday effort. How long it takes to clean, refill or maintain.
  • Durability. Materials, common failure points and warranty.
  • Total cost. Not just the purchase price, but refills, filters, liners and replacement parts over a year.
  • Fit for the home. Space needed, multi-cat suitability and how it looks in a living area.

The BestPurrPicks Score

Many product boxes on our site show a BestPurrPicks Score. It is calculated automatically from product data, such as customer ratings, the number of reviews and sales performance. It gives you a quick sense of how a product is doing with buyers overall.

It helps to know what the score is not:

  • It is not a hands-on rating. The number comes from product data, not from our own use of the product.
  • It does not know your situation. A product with a high score can still be the wrong pick for a senior cat, a small apartment or a home with three cats.
  • It can change. As new ratings and reviews come in, the score is updated.

That is why the score never decides a recommendation on its own. Our written verdict, the pros and cons and the situation each product suits best come from the research described above, and they always carry more weight than the number.

Keeping Guides Up to Date

Products change, get discontinued or receive new versions. We review our main guides regularly and show the date of the last update at the top of each article. If you notice something out of date, please tell us.
