The short answer: Here is how to clean a litter robot without damaging it: wipe the inside of the globe between full cleans, empty and wipe the waste drawer each time you change the liner, and do a full deep clean at least every three months. For the deep clean, empty the litter, unplug the unit, lift off the globe and wash it with mild soap and water, wipe the base with a damp cloth only, dry everything completely and reassemble. Never use bleach in the globe and never soak or spray the base.
This guide follows Whisker’s official Litter-Robot 4 deep cleaning instructions. We have not cleaned a Litter-Robot at home.
How Often
Whisker’s deep cleaning guide recommends a basic globe clean every one to three months and a deep clean at least every three months, more often with several cats. Between those, quick touch-ups keep odor down.
- Each drawer change: wipe the drawer, fit a fresh liner.
- Weekly or as needed: wipe the inside of the globe.
- Every 1 to 3 months: full deep clean.
Quick Touch-Up Between Deep Cleans
Whisker describes a fast routine you can do without emptying the litter:
- Wipe the inside and upper half of the globe with a cleaner wipe or damp towel.
- Rotate the globe so the litter sits behind the screen, exposing the flexible liner, and spot clean it.
- Let it dry, which takes moments, and return it to home.
How to Deep Clean Litter Robot Units, Step by Step
1. Empty the litter
Press Empty so the globe rotates and drops the litter into the drawer. Sweep any leftover litter toward the waste port, then press Cycle or Reset to return home. Whisker warns that wet leftover litter turns to clay, so get it all out.
2. Power off and take it apart
Switch off and unplug. Remove accessories such as the fence or shield. Press the buttons on both sides of the bonnet, lift and rotate it open, then lift the globe off by its handle. Remove the carbon filter from under the globe.
3. Wash the globe
Use mild soap and water, or Whisker’s own cleaner spray or wipes. Whisker says the globe has no electronics, so soap and water are safe, and a very dirty globe can be soaked and hosed down. Do not use bleach or bleach products inside the globe, which Whisker says can cause irritating fumes.
4. Clean the waste drawer
Pull out the drawer, wash or wipe it, and fit a new liner. Fold the liner edges over the drawer rim and press it flat to the bottom. Whisker warns that stretched or loose liners make the drawer full indicator read wrong, and that white liners give more accurate readings than dark ones.
5. Wipe the base
Never submerge, spray or soak the base or control panel, because they hold the sensors and electronics. Spray disinfectant onto a cloth, not onto the base, and wipe the surfaces.
6. Dry completely
Let the globe dry fully before reassembly. Damp surfaces make litter stick.
7. Reassemble
- Slide the globe back onto the base in roughly the home position.
- Check that the back sits flush in its rear pocket and the gear track meets the motor.
- Lower the bonnet so it hugs the globe and press down until it latches. The unit will not run without it.
- Refit the filter and accessories, plug in and power on. Solid blue means ready.
- Refill with clumping litter to the fill line.
What Not to Do
Most problems after cleaning litter robot units come from a few avoidable mistakes:
- No bleach in the globe.
- No water on the base or control panel.
- No strong scents that might put your cat off.
- No loose or dark drawer liners.
Keeping It Clean Longer
- Use a firm-clumping, low-dust litter. Our guide to the best cat litter for robot litter box models explains which work.
- Keep litter at the fill line. Too much gets carried into the drawer.
- Empty the drawer on time. With several cats, that may be every couple of days.
If a light code appears after cleaning, the bonnet may not be seated. Our guide to the litter robot yellow light flashing explains what to check.
Older Models
The steps above are for the Litter-Robot 4. Older models follow the same idea, but parts and buttons differ, so check Whisker’s guide for your model before cleaning a litter robot 3.
Quick Answers
How to clean the litter robot sensors?
Whisker’s deep clean guide only covers wiping the base with a damp cloth. For specific sensor cleaning, follow the support article for the light code or sensor in question.
Can I put the globe in the bathtub?
Whisker says a very dirty globe can be soaked and hosed, so a tub or outdoor hose works. Keep the base dry.
What is the easiest way how to clean robot litter box parts weekly?
Cleaner wipes on the globe interior and drawer each time you change the liner. It takes a few minutes and makes deep cleans easier.
Is litter robot cleaning different for multi-cat homes?
Only in frequency. Deep clean more often and empty the drawer sooner.
The Bottom Line
Wipe often, deep clean every few months, keep water and bleach away from the base and electronics, and fit liners flat. That covers how to clean litter robot units so they stay odor-free and accurate. If you were wondering how to clean a litter robot without causing errors, drying fully and seating the bonnet are the two steps that matter most. More help is in our robot litter box guides.
