The short answer: A good litter robot 4 enclosure has to fit a big machine with room to spare, let air move, open fully so you can pull the waste drawer and lift the bonnet, and give your cat a wide side entrance. The LR4 has a 22 by 27 inch footprint and stands about 29.5 inches tall, so plan for an interior noticeably larger than that. Whisker sells an official cabinet bundle, and a sturdy, well-ventilated DIY or third-party cabinet can work if it meets the same rules.
This guide is research based. It draws on Whisker’s product and setup pages. We have not built or used an enclosure for a Litter-Robot at home.
The Numbers to Plan Around
- Robot footprint: 22 by 27 inches, according to Whisker’s cabinet bundle page.
- Height: about 29.5 inches.
- Entry opening on the globe: 15.75 inches square.
- Weight: 24 lb empty, plus litter.
For comparison, Whisker’s own cabinet measures 30.7 inches wide, 28.1 inches deep and 34.3 inches tall. That gives a sense of the margin a purpose-built litter robot cabinet allows.
Rules Any Enclosure Must Follow
- Not jammed against walls. Whisker’s getting started guide says not to push the unit against a wall or into a corner.
- Firm, level floor. The same guide calls for a firm, level surface. An enclosure floor that flexes can upset the weight sensors.
- Cool and dry. Whisker asks for a cool, dry location, so avoid a sealed box with no airflow.
- Power nearby. Plan a cable route out the back.
- Full front access. You need to slide out the drawer and lift the bonnet for cleaning. A door that opens fully is essential.
- Side entry for your cat, lined up with the globe opening, big enough to walk through.
- Light and Wi-Fi. Keep the control panel visible or easy to check, and avoid thick metal that could weaken the Wi-Fi signal.
The Official Option
Whisker sells a litter robot storage cabinet as part of a bundle. Its page describes composite wood that resists scratches and spills better than traditional wood, an entry that can be on the left or right, and assembly that takes about an hour. When we checked, it was sold as a bundle with the robot and listed as out of stock. If you can get it, it is the simplest way to know everything fits.
Building or Buying Litter Robot Furniture
- Measure the robot and your space, then add a few inches on every side and above.
- Choose moisture-resistant material. Seal wood or use composite, since urine and cleaning will reach it.
- Cut the cat entry on the side that lines up with the globe opening. Sand and seal the edges.
- Add ventilation with vents or gaps at the back and top.
- Use a full-width front door or removable front panel.
- Reinforce the floor so it stays flat under the robot and litter.
- Leave a cable port at the back.
Third-party furniture to hide litter robot units is sold online, mostly by small makers. Check interior dimensions carefully, read reviews from LR4 owners specifically, and avoid anything that only just fits.
Introducing Your Cat
An enclosed robot is a double change: a moving box inside a new piece of furniture. Set up the robot in the open first, let your cat get used to it, then move it into the cabinet with the door open for a few days. Our guide on how to get cat used to litter robot units walks through the gradual approach.
Is an Enclosure a Good Idea?
It hides the robot and can trap some litter scatter, which suits living rooms. The trade-offs are less airflow, harder cleaning access and more space used. Many cats are fine with it, but some dislike any enclosed space. If you want ideas for regular boxes too, our guide to a cat litter enclosure covers the same airflow and access rules.
Quick Answers
Will a regular automatic litter box enclosure fit the LR4?
Often not. Many enclosures are sized for standard boxes or smaller robots. Check interior width, depth and height against the LR4 numbers above.
Does a cabinet for litter robot 4 affect the sensors?
Whisker’s guidance focuses on a firm, level floor and not crowding the unit. A flat, solid enclosure floor and some space around the robot are the key points.
Is a litter robot enclosure safe for the motor?
Give it airflow and do not block the globe’s rotation. Whisker asks for a cool, dry spot, so avoid hot, sealed cabinets.
The Bottom Line
A litter robot 4 enclosure works when it is roomy, ventilated, level and easy to open. Plan around the 22 by 27 inch footprint and almost 30 inch height, keep the robot off the walls, and introduce your cat gradually. More setup help is in our robot box setup guides.
